Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake (formerly known as The Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake, Inc.) was started over 30 years ago to promote the humane treatment of animals. We are a private 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization working hard to find safe and loving homes for homeless and/or abused animals in the Grove and Grand Lake communities. In the year 2014 alone, through our adoption and transport programs to out-of-state rescues, we were able to find adoptive homes for over 700 animals surrendered to our shelter. Over our 30-year history, we have saved thousands of homeless animals. Sadly, there are so many, many more homeless animals to save, but with the help of generous individuals and businesses in our surrounding communities, we can and will continue our mission because “We are their Shelter…You are their Future!”
During the last 30 years, Second Chance Pet Rescue focused all of its efforts and funds on the animals, looking after their health and well being but did not have sufficient funds to improve the animal’s immediate surroundings. Because we are a life-saving facility, an animal’s stay with us can last as little as a few days or for several years. We make sure the animals receive proper food, medical attention, proper vaccinations, clean housing and companionship. But many of the large dogs in our care are housed outdoors and exposed to the extreme Oklahoma weather. The Board of Directors of our organization determined that the way every animal is sheltered during their stay at our animal rescue must be improved. So to kick off our next 30 years, Second Chance Pet Rescue has begun its Shelter Expansion Building Project that improves the environmental needs of all the homeless dogs and cats that are in our care.
Pictured is the Before and After of Phase I of our Shelter Expansion Project – a new 2,560 square foot addition to the existing shelter building. The new addition contains canine indoor/outdoor kennels; two canine and one feline intake/isolation rooms for quarantine to keep sick animals separate from healthy animals; and a modern, more spacious cattery for happier, healthier felines. The new addition also includes an on-site dog/cat food storage area, a new laundry area and dog bathing facilities.
Our goal is to raise $175,000 to pay for Phase I of this Shelter Expansion Project. To date, we have raised over $115,000 toward our goal, but we need the communities’ financial support to raise all the funds necessary. Second Chance Pet Rescue is a self-funded organization receiving no financial support from any national humane society, from any state or federal agency, or the city of Grove. All of our funding comes from individual monetary donations, our fund raising efforts, and proceeds from the sale of donated merchandise from the Second Chance Thrift Shop located at 220 E. 3rd Street, downtown Grove.
